ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INCORPORATED. 

Founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday January 15, 1908, twenty extraordinary women paved the way for many other like-minded college individuals to join the illustrious sisterhood. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is the first Greek-letter organization established by African American college-trained women.

 Lead by our guiding light, Ethel Hedgemen Lyle, a junior at Howard University in Washington, DC, had a desire to organize a sorority based on five basic tenants. Lyle discussed this idea with a number of her classmates and after a period of exchanging ideas, a group of nine educated women got together to work create the prestigious organization known today.

As Alpha Kappa Alpha has grown, it has kept in balance two very important themes: the importance of the individual and strength of an organization of women of courage and ability. As the world became more complex, there was a need for associations which cut across racial, geographical, political, physical and social barriers.

Since its inception —109 years later, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated has continued to do great work and be of service to all mankind!
